“Without Ukraine, Russia ceases to be an empire.” These words of Zbigniew Brzezinski like a large nail stuck in the minds of the Kremlin rulers and their numerous menials. And gives them no rest when Ukraine starts to carry out an independent political course.
Dreams about the Empire make not the first generation of Putin’s technologists to seek for all new means to prevent the withdrawal of Ukraine to a free-swimming – far away from the Kremlin’s influence. In action go the means, tested by the millennia – bribery, blackmail and deceit.
Now, in particular, on the example of customs conflict, we are witnessing the beginning of a new, decisive turn in the Kremlin’s struggle for the Ukrainian lands. It could not have been otherwise, as the possible signing of the Association Agreement with the European Union in November this year could wean Ukraine from the habit of living in the empire, and help us to gradually transform into an independent subject on the European and international arenas.
Of course, this is not to taste to the Kremlin’s rulers. Even more – it ruins all their geopolitical plans to revive the empire whether on the basis of the CIS or on the basis of the Free Trade Area within the framework of this very same CIS, or on the basis of the Eurasian Economic Community, or on the basis of something else.
Taking into account that Kazakhstan is slowing down in the process of pro-Russian integration and Belarus, in principle, does not really want to go completely under the “big brother”, Ukraine’s withdrawal to European expanses makes Russian special and other services to act as quickly, tough and cynical as possible.
Activization of internal agents of the Kremlin, which, unfortunately, are too many in Ukraine, is aimed at shattering of the situation from the inside and at the borders. Recent conflicts in the Azov Strait are only the first fruits of transboundary challenges, set up by the Russians. Given that at Moscow’s fault Azov Strait is still not demarcated, this can be done quite easily and, most importantly, with impunity.
Without a doubt we can predict the activization of the so-called pro-Russian, but in fact, the FSB-sponsored movements in Crimea, Odessa, etc. Transcarpathian Rusyns and other “fifth columns” are expected to catch up.
Among which may well be on hand the supposedly nationalist party “Svoboda”. Having blown its cover in the protests against shale gas mining, this party has provided a lot of reason to doubt its patriotism. Unanimous work of “Svoboda” against shale gas mining synchronously with similar actions of pro-Kremlin “Ukrainian choice”, I believe, is far more convincing than the hundreds of vacuous declarations.
No doubt, that polls and ratings will become another tool of war. After all, as Kremlin denizens’ favorite Iosif Stalin used to say: “It’s no matter how they vote, its important how they count.” September and October in Ukraine will be the months when multiple surveys is published, from which it follows that the majority of citizens for some reason stand up for the Customs Union with Russia and don’t want to go to Europe at all. That, of course, would be a lie and manipulation. Any more or less objective studies show that the number of supporters of European integration is increasing every year against the decrease of number of supporters of integration with Russia and its satellites.
But some internal rocking of the boat is obviously not enough to lead Ukraine away from the European path. Also external bombs are needed, in the first place and mainly, informational.
The fellows from the Kremlin also became pretty skilled in this area. Enough to recall the flurry of publications in European media during the period of first and second gas wars between “Naftogaz” and “Gazprom”. So much mud was thrown at Ukraine at the time…
But now, on the eve of signing of the Association Agreement, which would mean the collapse of almost all the Kremlin’s plans, much more fat “canards” are sent flying. The “Kolchugas” (which, as everyone knows, was not really there) will be recalled. The disinformation on the supply of Ukrainian weapons to Syria is already running through the respected American media.
However this is not just enough. It is necessary to intimidate the Europeans, showing Ukrainians as nightmarish characters, against which the deceased Bin Laden looks like quite a nice person.
The egg, crushed on the lapel of the Polish president by member of pro-Russian extremist organization – it is just a scandalous sketch.
But Ukrainians being massively charged of terrorism – it’s much more serious. And no matter that these charges are, in fact, soap bubbles – a wave has been already launched!
So, for example, on July 19 the British police have arrested two Ukrainians within the investigation of bombing the mosques in the cities of Tipton and Walsall. Soon, one of the detainees was released. I am 100% sure that British will also release the second one with apologies.
In Egypt, the police arrested a Ukrainian tourist, suspecting him of terrorism. And just like in the previous case the detainee was released.
Such messages will multiply at a rate of rats in plague-stricken city. And the only goal of those is to create a maximum negative image of Ukrainians and Ukraine on the eve of the Vilnius summit.
I hope that European politicians will have enough understanding and conscience not to succumb to these provocations and to bring the first stage of Ukraine’s European integration to a logical ending – the signing of the Agreement. After all, it is in the best interest of the EU itself.
